SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH – HOLY FAMILY PARISH
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, engaged Studio io for an ambitious and thorough interior renovation. As a part of Holy Family parish, the church serves as the second largest in the pastorate. A dark, dated, and drab interior presented a challenge, with a mandorla (almond) shaped nave oriented on its long axis, and a limited sense of verticality in the circular skylight. The skylight was completely rebuilt and the sanctuary was entirely reworked, now featuring new marble furnishings with rich mosaic inlays, custom woodwork, and detailed stenciled paint. The massive central feature mosaic was designed to present the devotional, patronal Sacred Heart of Jesus combined with an eschatological focus – heavenly worship – featuring representations of the new Jerusalem and selected figures from the communion of saints meaningful to the parish and presbyterate. Throughout the sanctuary and nave, details repeat the Sacred Heart motif, including marble flooring inlays in the central aisle, further enhanced by a painted ceiling treatment above, and a custom baptistry canopy above the font. In addition to new custom lighting, a relocated choir and new sound system also highlight the central focus of the sanctuary from every seat in the room. Extensive work was carried through other parts of the building, including the adjacent Eucharistic Adoration chapel, with a new reredos and renovated confessional.
