ST. ANN CATHOLIC CHURCH

St. Ann Catholic Church in Coppell, TX engaged Studio io to lead and project manage a team for their Transcend Campaign involving a robust decorative paint scope by Conrad Schmitt Studios, working closely with a local contractor and multiple additional vendors. The scope included a custom reredos, tabernacle, crucifix, and statuary, custom appliqués on the altar, ambo, and baptismal font, apse screens, and pendant lighting, as well as entirely new architectural lighting, audio, and streaming video system. The extensive interior repaint required careful re-plastering and coordination with existing acoustical surfaces on wall-to-wall scaffolding and a full dance floor scaffold all the way up to the dome. The decorative paint work includes a massive dome mural featuring St. Ann and the Blessed Virgin Mary adoring the Holy Trinity, surrounded by angels in the heavenly liturgy and key patrons representing the communion of saints. Additional angels in the dome feature the archangels (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael) and the Sacred Heart, supported by twelve additional angels representing the apostles and the tribes of Israel (including the four Evangelists) with instruments of heavenly worship in the pendentives that support the four corners of the dome. Apart from the dome, the most focal element is a new Transfiguration piece highlighting the eschatological dimension of the liturgy foreshadowed by the earthly Transfiguration of Christ, surrounded by symbols of the seven sacraments representing the outpouring of the transforming grace of Christ into the world. A consistent decorative motif incorporates garden imagery and symbols of St. Ann and the Blessed Mother in a style that complements the original mission / romanesque church design. The outcome is a dramatic transformation to the entire church interior that offers many rich opportunities for encounter and reflection.
